Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Her birth date was February 20, 1937, in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, who was employed at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the youngest among six children. Her father's love of music and his collection of records at home had a major influence on Nancy as a young girl. At the age of 4years old, Nancy was aware her destiny was to be a performer. The talent she had developed was discovered by singing with the choir of her church. After high school the singer began appearing regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. The singer began performing in nightclubs at the at the same time. Following her graduation from high school at the age of 17, Nancy matriculated for one year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before leaving and becoming a professional performer. She made her first recording with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, which she sang with between 1956 and 1958. Nancy recorded her first record with Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball addederley suggested she move to New York for her career and, in 1959, she made the move into The Big Town. The agent of Adderley heard about her at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within one month of her arrival in New York City. Agent Adderley signed her to Capitol in 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess Who I Saw Today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B and to focus on music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 together with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top and, the year 1963 saw her scoring her first success with Tell Me the Truth. It led her to perform at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she quickly became a legend.
