In the nightclubs she started singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was 17 when she graduated highschool. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for one semester, Nancy quit to become a professional performer. Nancy recorded her first record in the band's studio with Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball addederley recommended that she relocate to New York for her career, and in 1959 she made the move to The Big Town. In less than a month she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley heard her sing and immediately signed her. She made her recording debut in the year 1960, with one single following a deal with Capitol records. Guess who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. She began by focusing on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to bring her to the forefront and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963.
